Join us for this inspirational training in the foundational concepts and stories of Jyotisha, the ancient science of Indian Astrology. For 3 weeks, immerse in deep study of this powerful system supported by an authentic Ayurvedic community committed to the preservation of vedic knowledge systems.

Appropriate for complete beginners as well as continuing students, this training will deepen your commitment and understanding of the vedic culture in which Jyotisha emerged and established itself as a pillar of wisdom and guidance.

Our Curriculum

The curriculum will be divided into three parts, each in 5-day blocks.

Week 1 Topics

--- By the end of Week 1, you will ---

  • Feel competent in the basic language of Jyotisha
  • Understand the origins and traditions of Jyotisha including the basic elements of the Law of Karma
  • Learn the Tattvas of Samkhya philosophy on which Jyotisha is built
  • Meet the Nava Grahas (9 planets) of Vedic astrology, their fundamental nature, qualities & characteristics
  • Deepen your understanding of each planet’s strengths and weaknesses, Friends and Enemies, motion, aspects and more
  • Learn the basic formation of Nakshatras, the lunar constellations
  • Learn the Rashis (constellations), including their elements, qualities & rulerships
  • Learn the Bhavas (houses), including their essential categories & meanings
  • Understand the meeting of Astronomy and astrology in a chart
  • Understand the concept and functions of Yogas and be familiar with some important on
  • Understand the construction and use of the Navamsha chart as an introduction to Amshas
  • Develop a beginner understanding of how to tell the story of the stars in a birth chart, with particular use of the 24 Bhava Yogas

Week 2 Topics

--- By the end of Week 2, you will ---

  • Understand the essentials of timing of events through Vimsottari Dasa
  • Know the categories of Yogas
  • Learn conditions of Yogas and how to interpret them
  • Understand the intersection of Yogas and Dashas, Yogas and Transits, and Yogas in Amshas
  • Be introduced to the concepts of Dagdha rasis, Yogi and Avayogi as interpolated by Seshadri Iyer.
  • Be introduced to the structure of Parasari and Tajika Amshas
  • Be introduced to traditional uses of Amshas in:

    - assessing planetary strength
    - outcomes of planetary placement, including Kshetra and Bija Sphutas
    - drekkana
    - use of multiple amshas
    - selected yogas involving amshas
    - chidra grahas

Week 3 Topics

--- In this final week, you will ---

  • Acquire a unique integration of classic and innovative principles for chart interpretation, comprised of:

    - Principles for and practice in Yoga vicara, Amsha vicara, and Dasha vicara
    - Introduction to Satyacharyas use of Nakshatras
    - Principles for Gochara
  • Integration and practice of all factors taught in the 3 blocks.
  • These classes are presented as an offering to the Jyotir Vidya, the patron goddess of Jyotisha, and in respect of our teachers.

Meet our Faculty

Margaret Mahan

Margaret has been a student of the inestimable Hart de Fouw for over 25 years, in Jyotisha, Palmistry, Vaastu, and Samkhya. She had the good fortune to be coached by Dr. Robert Svoboda in Ayurveda and related subjects for several years. Margaret consults and teaches these subjects across North, Central, and South America, and India.

Before beginning the odyssey into the beauty of classical India, she was an organic foods producer, environmental activist, political organizer, rancher, and college executive officer, with graduate degrees in public policy and public administration.

She teaches and studies and offers private sessions from her home in British Columbia and from her temporary perch in South India.

Emily Glaser RN, BSN

Emily Glaser was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing with a specialization in Neuroscience and Hospice. Interested in world medicine she worked internationally in China and Nepal with Global Volunteer Network, Cambodia with Angkor Hospital for Children and Tanzania with St. Lucia Nursing Home. After Emily quenched her thirst for world travel she returned home to NM, graduated with a degree in Culinary Arts and started her journey into the deep and profound science of Ayurveda. In 2009, Emily had the great honor to study under Dr. Vasant Lad at The Ayurvedic Institute. Shortly after, she spent 6 months at Vaidyagrama--Ayurvedic Healing Village in southern India where she furthered her study of Ayurveda and Panchakarma therapy with chief physician, Dr. Ramadas. Emily has been a student of Indian Astrology for 10 years and has been studying in the lineage of Hart de Fouw, under the tutelage of Penny Farrow. Emily teaches internationally and carries a deep and profound respect for the vedic sciences.

Accommodations and Meals

We will be staying at Vaidyagrama Healing Village, an Ayurvedic community that includes a panchakarma treatment hospital and a residential community. The entire campus is designed and built according to the principles of Vastu shastra, the vedic science of architecture and auspicious placement.

The accommodations are simple and spacious. Each room includes 2 single beds and private bathroom with running hot water and western toilets.

The delicious vegetarian meals are prepared according to the principles of Ayurveda, the ancient system of health and healing. Prepared with vegetables grown on site or nearby, local spices and herbs, and milk from the on-site goshala or cow pen, you will taste the purity and love in every bite. Should you have any medical needs, resident Ayurvedic physicians are available.


Plan to arrive at Coimbatore Airport, Tamil Nadu, on December 15, 2019, and we will arrange for ground transportation to our site. Classes will begin the following day.
