Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, heat and energy production. It’s responsible for how we process or metabolize our emotions and sensory perceptions and how we discriminate between right and wrong. The primary function of Pitta is transformation.
People with a predominant Pitta dosha have a fiery nature in both body and mind. They usually have a medium build in size and weight and have a warm body temperature with great digestion. They have an aversion to hot weather, sunlight, and heat and very sensitive eyes. They are extroverted individuals who are ambitious and determined and enjoy competitive sports and games.
When Pitta’s are in balance, they have a lustrous complexion, lots of energy, strong appetite and digestion. They have a strong intellect and ability to concentrate and are good decision makers and speakers. They are precise, sharp-witted, and often outspoken.
When unbalanced or under stress they can be short tempered, argumentative, and judgmental. Physically they could suffer from skin rashes, excessive body heat, indigestion, and heartburn.
To help balance Pitta aim for things that are cooling, sweet, and stabilizing. Balance rest and activity and spend time outdoors. Refrain from skipping meals or letting yourself become too hungry and favor cooling foods such as coconuts, cucumbers, sweet fruits and melons. Daily oil massages using coconut oil are great for balancing Pitta as is Abhyanga massage.
